Generating Demand for Family Planning among the Urban Poor in Nigeria
Demand generation is one of the ingredients that make up TCI’s “SDA secret sauce” in addition to service delivery and advocacy. Demand generation activities aim to increase clients’ desire to use family planning by targeting a change in their attitudes or perceptions about FP or increasing their awareness or knowledge about FP methods so that they can make an informed choice of method uptake.
TCI Nigeria engages existing state and community structures to increase awareness and knowledge about family planning as well as provide referrals from the community to health facilities for FP services. TCI Nigeria demand generation strategies include establishing and strengthening the State SBCC Committee, social mobilization, engagement and strengthening community theater, and mass media engagement with focus on adaptation of radio spots. The key approaches are described in the following pages in greater detail.
