Overview

What is The Challenge Initiative?

The Challenge Initiative (TCI) supports urban local governments in the rapid scale up of high-impact family planning practices and other interventions. TCI is an innovative, demand-driven approach: participating cities self-select and bring their own financial and human resources to the table. TCI’s in-country partners – known as regional accelerator hubs – work with local governments to design an evidence-based family planning program that is customized to their urban needs and circumstances and sustainable in the long term. Supported cities have access to TCI coaches and TCI University (TCI-U) along with some seed funding.

What is TCI University?

TCI-U is the key mechanism for rapidly scaling up evidence-based interventions by transferring best practice knowledge and skills while cultivating a culture of learning, exchange, and continuous improvement. Capacity transfer takes place over a period of about three years, as TCI coaches use TCI-U toolkits to train local government staff, who in turn train additional local health staff. TCI’s stepped-down coaching model – coaching intensity declines as capacity builds – is designed to build sustainable technical and management capacity at the local level while strengthening health systems. Located in East Africa, Francophone West Africa, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the Philippines, TCI hubs guide new cities through the three-stage TCI process (expression of interest, program design, and implementation). Traditional learning is kept to a minimum and is combined with other methods to encourage social and experiential learning. This includes webinars, coaching sessions, peer-to-peer exchange through communities of practice, step-by-step guides, and multimedia resources and tools.

Who are TCI-U key players at the hub level?

  • Hub staff: Individuals with many years of family planning experience, who are oriented and trained on TCI tools and key competencies, such as leadership and management, adaptation, data for decision-making, and leveraging resources, to become master coaches.
  • Managers: Local government leaders who make a political commitment and allocate local resources to strengthen family planning programs. They likely do not have a strong familiarity with family planning programs, but they recognize the benefits for their communities and return on investment family planning offers.
  • Implementers: Those on the front lines of activities in existing and potential TCI cities. Implementers are likely to be family planning, health, or supply chain management professionals who learn how to adapt and apply evidence-based interventions and tools from TCI-U to implement and strengthen their own urban family planning programs.
  • Health care providers: These providers can be in public or private facilities, pharmacies, or community health workers.

Registration/Login

 How do I join TCI-U?

To access TCI-U content and become a member of TCI’s global urban reproductive commu-nity of practice, you need to first create an account.

  1. Click “Register” from the TCI home page, or you can click the “Log In/Register” but-ton in the topmost menu on any page in the TCI site or the “Log In or Register” but-ton from the main menu in the TCI-U subsite.
  2. Then click “Register an Account” on the right of the pop-up screen. Or you may go straight to the registration form.
  3. You will be required to fill in the form with your name, email address, city, and coun-try, and you will be asked to create a new password. Your email and password will be used as your login. You may provide some additional information and add a photo to complete your profile, but this is not required.

After you register, a confirmation email will be sent to your email for verification. Once you click on the link in the email, your account will be activated and you will receive a “Welcome to TCI-U” email.

I can't log in or forgot my password. What do I do?

If you have already registered for TCI-U but can’t remember your password:

  1. Click on the "Log In/Register" button in the topmost menu or the "Log In or Register" button from the main menu in TCI-U. Then click on “Lost Password.”
  2. You will then be prompted to enter in your email address.
  3. You should receive an email that will direct you to a page to reset your password.

If you have not yet registered an account with TCI-U, you will not be able to login. To create an account, follow the registration steps above. If you are still having login issues, please reach out to info@tciurbanhealth.org.

Certificates

How do I earn certificates?

You can earn certificates for successfully passing at a quiz at the end of each of the interventions listed under the Service Delivery, Demand Generation, Advocacy and Essentials program areas in TCI-U’s toolkits – the Global Toolkit, the Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health Toolkit and six hub-specific toolkits. There are also toolkits for Coaching, Gender Essentials, and Family Planning Basics.

Remember: To earn a certificate, you must pass the short quiz associated with each intervention.

I can't find the certificates that I've earned. Where can I locate them?

You must be logged into TCI-U to view your profile, which also details your progress in TCI-U, and access your certificates.

  1. Once logged in, click on “My Profile” from the topmost menu bar or from the main menu in TCI-U.
  2. Click on the button "Looking for your Certificates?" on the top right.
  3. From the list, click on each certificate link to download/print.
