Overview

What is The Challenge Initiative?

The Challenge Initiative (TCI) offers a groundbreaking opportunity to have a dramatic impact on reproductive health for underserved urban poor communities by rapidly scaling up proven approaches from the Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (URHI). TCI is taking an innovative, demand-driven approach: rather than being chosen, participating cities self-select and bring their own resources (cash or in-kind) to the table. Such cities work with TCI’s in-country partners — called “Accelerator Hubs” — to design an evidence-based family planning program that is customized to their urban needs and circumstances and sustainable in the long term. Selected TCI cities will have access to the TCI University and a visionary financing framework.

What is TCI University?

TCI University provides the foundation for rapidly scaling up evidence-based interventions by transferring knowledge and skills built from the URHI experiences and cultivating a culture of learning, exchange and continuous improvement. Learning takes place in different formats across the four components of TCI-U: toolkit, coaching, training and a community of practice. Each of these are designed to support Accelerator Hub staff in East Africa, Francophone West Africa, India, and Nigeria to guide new geographies through the three-stage TCI process (expression of interest, program design, and implementation). Traditional classroom-based learning is kept to a minimum and is combined with other approaches or spaces to encourage social and experiential learning. This includes webinars, coaching sessions, peer-to-peer exchange through communities of practice, step-by-step guides, and multimedia resources and tools.

Who are TCI-U audiences?

There are three TCI-U audiences:

  • Accelerator Hub staff: Individuals with many years of family planning experience, who will need to be oriented and trained on TCI tools and key competencies, such as coaching, adaptation and leveraging resources.
  • Managers: Local government leaders (in existing and potential TCI locations) who make a political commitment and allocate local resources to strengthen family planning programs. They likely do not have a strong familiarity with family planning programs, but they have come to recognize the development benefits and return on investment for family planning.
  • Implementers: Those at the front lines of project activities in existing and potential TCI geographies. Implementers are likely to be family planning, health, or supply chain management professionals who will need to learn how to adapt and apply evidence-based approaches and tools from TCI-U to implement and strengthen their own urban family planning programs.

Certificates

How do I earn certificates?

You can earn a certificate for each of the approaches under the Program Areas of Services & Supply, Demand Generation and Advocacy in all of the toolkits – the Global Toolkit, AYSRH Toolkit and Hub-specific Toolkits. To earn a certificate, you must complete the short assessment related to the specific approach.

I can’t find the certificates that I’ve earned. Where can I locate them?

You must be logged into TCI-U to access your achievements and certificates. Once you are logged in, click on the ‘Profile’. All of your certificates are stored in your profile section. Go to Program Areas and then click on the arrow icon to the right of the Program Area name (don’t click on the program area name or it will take you to that page). Once you click on the arrow, you should see your earned certificates. Then click on the icon under Certificate and your certificate should open as a pdf ready for printing or downloading.

Note Feature

What’s the purpose of the note feature?

The note feature is a useful tool that allows you to type in and/or copy and paste relevant notes/text/URLs as you review an approach in the Global Toolkit, AYSRH Toolkit and Hub-specific Toolkits.

How can I use it?

When you are reviewing a specific approach in the Global Toolkit, AYSRH Toolkit and Hub-specific Toolkits, you simply click on the ‘Take Notes’ icon on the lower right-hand side of the page. This will open up a text box where you can type, insert URLs, make a bulleted list, and save or print the notes you take.

Where are my notes saved?

If you save the notes, you will be able to return to them at a later visit. These notes are stored in your Profile page.
