An integrated family planning outreach, one of TCI’s high-impact interventions, is conducted in East Africa.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation named Bayer AG a finalist in the 2023 Citizens Awards, a long-standing program that honors purpose-driven businesses for their leadership in solving the world’s biggest challenges.

Bayer was nominated in the Community Improvement Program category for its support of The Challenge Initiative (TCI), a platform designed to sustainably scale up family planning programs in Africa and Asia.

For more than two decades, this annual awards program has recognized the most innovative and impactful corporate citizenship initiatives that leverage a company’s talent, resources and expertise to improve communities.

TCI is a global initiative based at the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that supports improving access to family planning services for women and girls living in poor urban communities in Africa and Asia. TCI supports the local governments of more than 170 cities across 13 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, India, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda) in implementing high-impact family planning interventions.

Bayer announced in 2019 that it is committed to help provide 100 million women in low- and middle-income countries with access to modern contraception by 2030. In 2020, Bayer joined the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other donors to support TCI.

The winners of the 2023 Citizens Awards will be announced during the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s Business Solves Conference on November 1-2, 2023.
