As part of The Challenge Initiative (TCI)’s ongoing efforts to enhance health services in urban poor areas, TCI’s East Africa team has developed a new animated “how-to” video for health facility staff.

This latest addition to TCI’s animated resources offers step-by-step guidance for conducting a Whole Site Orientation (WSO), a comprehensive approach to ensuring health facility staff at all levels are knowledgeable about family planning and adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH) services. This video serves as a practical tool, making WSO implementation accessible and efficient.

The WSO process equips health facility staff – clinical and non-clinical alike – with essential information on family planning and AYSRH. This inclusive orientation method helps eliminate biases and increases awareness across all facility roles. By training staff to provide accurate, unbiased information, WSO ensures that women, adolescent girls, and youth can access the family planning services they need, and it improves the referral process, reducing missed opportunities for care.

The video covers the following information for conducting a WSO:

  • Preparation: Facilities start by identifying facilitators knowledgeable in family planning to lead the orientation sessions.
  • Scheduling: Facilitators plan convenient, staggered sessions to accommodate staff availability without disrupting services.
  • Content: Key topics should include family planning methods, myth-busting, infection control, and youth-friendly services.
  • Session Management: Guidelines for participant tracking, progress monitoring, and checklist utilization are covered, supporting consistent quality across WSO sessions.

By following the WSO process demonstrated in the video, facilities can ensure that staff are better prepared to offer family planning services across various service points. This comprehensive staff education reduces misinformation, integrates family planning into broader health services, and fosters a more youth-friendly environment.

Viewers will gain practical insights into implementing WSO with minimal disruption. The video’s clear, actionable steps make the orientation accessible for any facility, leaving viewers prepared to improve service delivery and meet the unmet family planning needs of women and youth in their communities.

Check out the WSO video today in TCI’s East Africa Toolkit to see how your facility can make a positive impact through this effective, scalable approach to staff training.
