Christine navigates the MNCH toolkit on TCI-U.

In public health, innovation doesn’t always mean starting from scratch. Sometimes, it means recognizing the value of what already exists – and knowing where to find it. For Christine Muia, a Project Manager at Jhpiego Kenya, that insight came while exploring TCI University (TCI-U), The Challenge Initiative’s online learning platform that helps local governments improve delivery of essential health services, including family planning and maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH).

What Christine discovered wasn’t just another toolkit with training materials. It was a turning point.

While browsing TCI-U’s extensive library, she found the new Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Toolkit, a comprehensive, evidence-based resource designed to support frontline health workers in delivering high-quality care to women, infants, and children. As Christine explains:

The MNCH toolkit was a game-changer, It broke down complex interventions into simple, actionable steps. It gave our providers the confidence to deliver quality care, even in the most resource-limited settings.”

Christine introduces key TCI MNCH approaches to support her program roll-out.

Christine quickly saw the toolkit’s potential to standardize care across facilities and close knowledge gaps. At the time, she was leading a project aimed at improving maternal and newborn health in underserved counties – exactly the kind of context the toolkit was designed for.

TCI’s MNCH work focuses on strengthening service delivery across the entire continuum of care, from preconception and pregnancy through childbirth and early childhood. The toolkit provides practical guidance for implementing high-impact interventions, including antenatal care, safe delivery, postnatal care, immunization, and nutrition. These interventions are paired with proven coaching and mentoring approaches to build the capacity of local providers and strengthen health systems.

Christine’s experience is part of a larger shift in how health professionals in Kenya are building their skills. So far:

Christine’s experience is part of a larger learning movement in Kenya. So far:

    • 3,200+ health professionals from Kenya registered on TCI-U
    • 8,600+ certificates earned for successfully passing knowledge assessment quizzes

In addition, health care providers in East Africa can now earn Continuous Professional Development (CPD) credits through TCI-U. In Kenya, CPDs are issued in coordination with the professional Nursing Council of Kenya association.

This means TCI-U isn’t just a tool for learning – it’s a platform for professional growth. As Christine puts it:

The CPD accreditation has really motivated our teams. It’s not just about learning anymore; it’s about growing professionally and being recognized for it.”

But Christine didn’t stop there. She embedded the toolkit into her project’s core. Her team integrated TCI-U modules into training sessions, mentorship programs, and peer learning forums. This led to a ripple effect – stronger provider confidence, more consistent service delivery, and better health outcomes for women and children.

Christine’s story reflects the broader impact of TCI’s work in East Africa: empowering local governments and health workers with the tools, training, and support they need to deliver high-quality, life-saving care – starting with the click of a button.
