Mr. and Mrs. Baderinwa discuss how they have benefitted from family planning.

In just a few short years, Osun State has emerged as a leader in expanding access to family planning in Nigeria. Since partnering with The Challenge Initiative (TCI) in 2022, the state has rolled out high-impact interventions across 10 local government areas, with a clear commitment to making family planning a cornerstone of its public health strategy.

With technical coaching and catalytic funding from TCI, Osun State has trained over 80 community mobilizers and strengthened more than 40 health facilities. These efforts are paying off. More women – and increasingly, adolescents – are now walking into health facilities asking informed questions and choosing the methods that best meet their needs.

Local government officials and health providers say the impact is clear. Dr. Isiaka Adekunle from the Ministry of Health shared:

We knew the data was there. But TCI helped us see how to use it and act on it.”

Health workers across the state now receive structured mentoring, supportive supervision, and hands-on coaching to deliver quality services.

Community engagement has also been key. Mobilizers, religious leaders, and media advocates have helped debunk myths and increase awareness – especially among groups that once opposed family planning. As one faith leader put it:

We sensitized our people – from pastors to church members – to understand the benefits.”

Families are responding. Mrs. Baderinwa, a mother, shared:

It gives us peace of mind.”

Her husband agreed, while other women highlighted how family planning has helped them avoid unplanned pregnancies and better care for their children.

To ensure these gains are sustained, Osun is investing in data use, integration across services, and local ownership. Family Planning Coordinator Mrs. Ololade Abatan said:

With the lessons we’ve learned from TCI, collaboration and integration are very important for us. We need to integrate our services.”

With systems strengthened and communities on board, Osun State is setting an example for what’s possible when local governments lead – and are supported to succeed.

Since July 2022, TCI’s efforts in Osun State have contributed to more than 38,000 additional family planning clients.
