Arvind, a 27-year-old father of three from Mau (Uttar Pradesh, India), took a long-awaited leave from his private job in November to spend quality time with his family. During this break, Geeta, an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) trained with support from The Challenge Initiative (TCI), visited Arvind and his wife to discuss family planning options.
Geeta walked them through the different contraceptive methods available, explained the benefits of each one and then told them where they could access services. After talking it through, the couple initially decided on female sterilization.
When Arvind accompanied his wife to the district women’s hospital for her procedure, he spotted a banner at the help desk promoting No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) Fortnight, which takes place from November 21 to December 4. Intrigued, he approached Rampravesh Yadav, the Help Desk Manager. After hearing why Arvind was there, Rampravesh encouraged him to consider taking a more active role in family planning, saying:
It is commendable that you have decided to limit your family. However, there’s even more you can contribute by adopting a family planning method. Adopting a method will not only empower your family’s future but sets a powerful example, showcasing the commitment of a responsible and forward-thinking husband.”
After learning more about NSV and getting his questions answered, Arvind felt reassured and decided to undergo the straightforward procedure himself at the district hospital during the most recent NSV Fortnight.
Now grateful to both Rampravesh and Geeta, Arvind and his wife are eager to share what they’ve learned about family planning with their friends. They want to emphasize how important mutual decision-making and support are in building a healthier family life.
